Kansas City Wedding : Brandon & Maiya

I had initially intended to blog this wedding over a week ago but a trip to Seattle and an unexpected inability to walk has set me back a few days.   Now, on to the good stuff..

First and foremost, a big “thank you” to Sarah Dickerson for inviting me to be her second shooter for the day!  She was alot of fun to work with! If you’d like to see the main post for this wedding, click here.  Brandon and Maiya, after nearly 15 years of being together, have made it official.  Saturday marked their beautiful wedding which (for me) started in Fairway, KS to get some shots of the guys getting ready.  Of all of the weddings I’ve photographed or been a part of, guys never like having their pictures taken.  They were good sports about it and we actually had quite a few good laughs along the way.  After a wonderful ceremony at the Prince of Peace Church, it was off to Harling’s Bar in Westport. (I feel guilty placing both of those places in the same sentence…yikes.) The urban decay, collectique junk scattered about and the scent of many spilled drinks all add to the atmosphere of Harling’s.  If you know the place, you know exactly how much of a dive it really is, but nonetheless very very cool to photograph and we did get some unique shots.  The elegance of Maiya’s wedding dress contrasted so well in there, it was unbelievable.  After a few drinks, it was off to the Crossroads for a few more photos.   After all of the liquid courage at Harling’s one of the groomsmen took a headfirst dive straight into the pavement…yes I was there to capture it all, so be sure to check it out below.  Once 6pm rolled around we had to get the wedding party to the Town Pavilion to finish up the evening with a little dinner and dancing.  Before I wrap this up, I thought I’d share one fun fact from the evening from a couple who had been married for 57 years.  They were asked their secret to a successful marriage and genuinely responded with; “When you start to argue….just take off your clothes and get in bed.”  Again, thank you Sarah and congratulations to Brandon & Maiya.

Garden of The Gods – Colorado

It’s funny how no matter how many years go by, you still have instant friendship with people you grew up with.  It had to have been 14 or 15 years since Lisa and I had last seen one another.  Although during the year I spent in Iraq, she did send me a letter and photo of her, my brother Bryan, and I when we were kids.  I still have all of the memories as if it were yesterday.  It’s amazing how the early childhood memories stick with you.   Thanks to Facebook’s infinite wisdom, it suggested I add her as one of my friends.  How Facebook knew I could potentially know her is beyond me…as I’m fairly diligent with keeping my personal information off of Facebook.  It was a complete coincidence that she and her husband JJ were living in Colorado Springs, the very place where I would be traveling over the next couple of months.  On top of that, the rest of her family from Maine would be in town at the same time.  We all ended up getting together to take a few photos and afterwords enjoyed a nice dinner together.  It was great to catch up with everyone, meet JJ and their little one, AJ.  I think I mixed up AJ and JJ just a few times, haha.  You try saying them together, five times fast!

Tour de BBQ 2010

4 AM came fast this past Saturday morning as Dale and I made our way to the Kansas City Power and Light (after coffee at Quick Trip) to volunteer as one of four official photographers assisting Atherton Photography for Kansas City’s 2nd Annual Tour de BBQ.  With almost 2,000 riders participating, they toured across Kansas City on either the 61, 30 or 15 mile routes, stopping at Kansas City’s top BBQ pits for sampling of some of KC’s best BBQ.  Proceeds from the day went directly to support the fight against cancer through the Kansas City Livestrong Army.  Since the majority of my experiences have been with landscape, portrait and wedding photography, photographing cyclists moving at 15-20 miles per hour wasn’t as simple as one might think.  At least not if you want the end result to be somewhat interesting.

After the race, Jason, Jeni, Dale (fellow KC portrait / wedding photographers) and I met up for some BBQ and a few cold ones on behalf of Boulevard Brewing Co….nothing beats the wheat!  Oh yah, and Smashmouth put on a show at KC Live! Overall it was a fun day for a great cause and I look forward to doing it again next year.  All of the photos can be seen here.  Everyone did an awesome job capturing the day, lets hope we’re able to raise some money to kick cancer’s ass!

Oh, and Jackstack…I’m coming back to see you, that smoked sausage was hot!

Kansas City Senior Photos | Class of 2011

As someone who offers senior portraits, I often get a lot of questions about how my services are different, or the same , as what’s offered to seniors in the schools.

Most high school seniors (and parents) are familiar with Lifetouch, as they have a pretty good grasp on senior portraits here in Kansas City.  Things haven’t changed much since I was in high school and today’s seniors are still getting the same old treatment, usually consisting of a boring blue backdrop set up in the gymnasium or music room.  I have a much different approach and believe being a senior and graduating high school is not only one of life’s major milestones, but an ending of one period of your life and the beginning of another.  It’s important enough to consider the alternative;  custom photography.  I believe senior photos should reflect your personality.  If you played sports, an instrument, had a specific hobby, favorite pet or place you and your friends hung out, I say let’s represent that in your senior photos.

My senior sessions are all about individuality and typically last 1 to 2 hours, during which time we’ll go wherever you want within the Greater Kansas City area.  It could be downtown, the Plaza, West Bottoms, a favorite park or an old barn in the middle of a field.  Don’t worry, I’ve always got a few places in my back pocket if nothing is coming to mind.  The point I’m trying to make is your session is only limited by our surroundings, not by a boring blue background.  During the session, I encourage a few clothing changes to mix things up and to ensure we have plenty of different looks for you (and your parents) to choose from later.  We’ll get the classic shots that your parents are sure to enjoy before throwing on your favorite pair of jeans and being yourself.  I’ll do my best to make you laugh, either at me or with me, but I try not to “say cheese”…gah that’s cheesy!  We’ll have fun and get some cool shots too!  My advice for the ladies is to wear a cami top which makes changing on the go much easier.

How do my prices compare with the senior photo giants?  Lifetouch’s business model is based on the back end (meaning a small payment up front, followed by a much larger amount in the end.)  While their sitting fees may be $50, their packages range from $250 to $500 or more (keep in mind the boring blue background).  Are you likely to save money? Maybe, but I can assure you, you’re going to get more for your money.  On top of that, I’m a small local business, not a national company, and together we are keeping our hard earned dollars right here in Kansas City.

My services are based on a $149 session fee which includes:

* 1-2 hour photo shoot
* Two locations
* Multiple clothing changes
* Online proofs (15-25 images)
* Standard edits on all proofs
* 2 Premium edits
* Free Facebook images
* 16 Free wallets

Usually about 2 weeks or less after your session, I post your own private online gallery for you to view your senior photos.  From here, you simply place your order.  There are no minimums, and there’s no fancy packages to upsell.  All prints ordered through me come from one of the nations top print labs so you can be sure you are getting the best available product in today’s market. Desk portraits begin at $10, wall portraits begin at $35.

Now pay attention!  My senior referral program pays $50 cash…yes, cash.  If you’ve got a lot of friends, this could add up very fast!   The fall is just around the corner, contact me to see what I can do for you.
